Sue Arnold says: "Another lawsuit 8/23: SANTA FE — A national civil rights group will file a lawsuit today against Gov. Susana Martinez's administration, claiming it unlawfully has tried to force 10,000 people to verify their residency. The suit is being bought by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund. The organization said it is filing the case in state court on behalf of certain New Mexico legislators and residents. Martinez, an ardent opponent of a state law that allows illegal immigrants to obtain New Mexico driver's licenses, this summer authorized a residency verification program aimed at foreign nationals. The state Taxation and Revenue Department sent letters to 10,000 people. It instructed them to travel in person to Albuquerque or Las Cruces to verify their residency. Though New Mexico issues driver's licenses without requiring proof of immigration status, applicants must live in the state. Martinez said fraud has been a persistent problem in the licensing program. Illegal immigrants from from as far away as Chicago have been arrested while trying to obtain New Mexico driver's licenses. MALDEF executives say Martinez's Residency Certification Program "singles out a specific class of individuals for an onerous and wasteful exercise of state resources." The organization also said the program was never considered or authorized by the state Legislature. Martinez, a Republican, initiated the residency checks as a executive decision, authorizing $49,000 for a call Advertisement center to handle questions and setting up verification centers in New Mexico's two largest cities. She said the money came from Motor Vehicle Division's budget. Executives of MALDEF would not say which legislators are suing, but all are Democrats. Republican lawmakers solidly support Martinez on the verification program and her push to repeal the licensing law. Legislators who are party to the lawsuit are to appear at a news conference this afternoon at the State Capitol. Martinez lost her attempt last winter to repeal the law enabling illegal immigrants to receive driver's licenses. Republicans will try again in a special legislative session that starts Sept. 6. —— Santa Fe Bureau Chief Milan Simonich can be contacted at msimonich@tnmnp.com or 505-820-6898. The new RLD (Regulation and Licensing Department) was/is (put his company in his sons name) a contractor (those that despise RLD and regulations), but because he was a big contributor, he is now in charge of RLD! He also has sent out e-mails forbidding RLD employees to talk to the media, why? This is similar to a vampire in charge of a blood bank! "

elisabeth reed says: "Governor We who voted for you are sadly disappointed by this decison regarding Darren White. He is not just of questionable moral fibre. We all have known of his greed and ambition that reek of personal gain but to associate your very good self with this type of typical corrupt old school New Mexican Smokey and the Bandit is beneath you. I had a larg party on Monday last and the general word was that you are not making this decision with your usual reputavle code of ethics. Please re-consider. It would make great strides in those of us who want to support you. But this man casts a large stain over your early days as the primary leader in New Mexico. Sincerely, Elisabeth Reed "

Charlie Vigil says: "Susana, did you forget what being an American is about? If you have one bad apple do you throw out the bushel? What you are doing with immigration is political genocide and in strange twist, a form of political cannibalism since yoju are an Hispanic (Latina) yourself. You are portraying a teacher that punishes or worse yet discards her students because there is a diviant in the classroom. Susana I ask that you fix the problem. I didn't vote you into office to be a dictator. The state has real issues and your political agendas are not what I want to see. I want to see positve actions on how to better our state, Had I listened to the wise I would not have voted for you, now that I have, I would like to see you actually improve the state instead of creating turmoil. In parts of this country you too are one of "them"."

Come on, say something with supported facts and what the implications of actions or non-actions are going to be! She is obviously unqualified to serve in the capacity of Governor, she should have run for Attorney General, where at least she can play to the crowd. The candidate was very happy to talk to her (she was the only young person in the place) and the student told her of all of her accomplishments which are many. She then told her that she is an undocumented immigrant. The girl then asked her why she is targeting young people like herself with the lottery scholarship denial proposal. Martinez looked her in the eye and without any reasons, data or any information simply stated "There is no money for you" this is a true story that reflects the careless attitude that martinez has for these hard-working kids who were brought here through no choice of their own."

He would be the best person to beat Susana Martinez in 2014. Susana Martinez may have a very strong opponent in 2014 now. I hope the New Mexico Democratic Party runs Jeff Bingerman to be governor in 2014 plus Jeff Bingerman is from the Southwest part of the state so he would perform very well in Las Cruces Susana's home city. I hope this gamble with him leaving the Senate will pay off and he can run for Governor in 2014. He would be a very strong Democrat against Martinez with the funds, time because he can tour and talk and starte getting connected with voters around the state and Jeff Bingerman has the name recogiznition. Are you that contemptuous of the talent we have in our own state? Look again at the budget mess Texas is in - you touted their conservative fiscal model and now they're in much worst of a mess than we're in! Thank goodness you failed in your attempt to kill the film industry and the jobs they bring to our state. With Sarah Palin and Jan Brewer as your idols and role models, I pity the future of our poor state. Tomas No Mas says: "I remember when I was asked to cover an event when Susana Martinez was in Espanola during a book reading. She was going to be fielding questions from the media and I was escorted outside with the Sun Reporter and waited 15 minutes in the cold for her to come out. I left because I was so cold and I really value my time. You can waste $10, $30 but never waste time because you can never get that back. We waited 30 minutes for her to arrive in the classroom and the kids were getting antsy too. (I lost 45 minutes of my life waiting for the opportunity to ask one question.) We have NEVER had such a pressure shortage in the modern history in this state. What a crock. Paid for by BIG OIL."

Eugene Martinez says: "I find it hypocritical that you promised to bring jobs to New Mexico and fire 300 state employees that knew the job and didn't place these employees somewhere else but on unemployment. I also find it hard to believe that the recognition you gave to the Gas Of NM is only bad publicity, you gave to the ABQ police and NM National guard medals but you failed to recognize the hard working Gas company employees that had nothing to with the outage and everything to do to get service restoration. You claim you are concerned about the well being of all New Mexicans but you failed to dispatch any other police depts. you have the state and Santa Fe police depts . at your disposal. What did they really do to speed up the restoration of gas "nothing" all they did was watch the Technicians do the work. I am not against any military person or police officers, but I believe in being fair to all involved. But if you want to hold the Gas company accountable for what they have done then you should be accountable for what you have done and will continue to do. Keep the films in NM. I personally know a lot of who have gained employment because of the film industry and they are all from NM. Taking this away will hurt a lot of families because you will take their jobs from them and then they would leave NM for another state. So keep hurting us like this and you will not be governor for a second term. Which I will pray does not happen. "
